For centuries parents have tried to manage the gender of their babies. Some of the pressures for this have been cultural, such as in ancient societies where boys were valued for their hunting skills. Today in China, boys are more prized than girls.

The desire to manage a baby’s gender has led to some fantastic folk methods. For instance, some “old wives tales” counsel that in order to conceive a boy baby, wives should eat lots of red meat and salty snacks and drink lots of soda. These folk remedies also contend that lovemaking for conception should focus on the man’s pleasure, so that he reaches orgasm first, ensuring a boy.

Science has progressed farther along with gender prediction, but not necessarily with gender selection. For instance, there is now a procedure known as Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. This process works by in-vitro fertilization. Embryos are created outside the body, tested for genetic disorders and gender, and then the embryos with the desired gender are implanted inside the woman’s uterus.

There are two disadvantages to PGD. First, it’s an expensive process, costing nearly $20,000 per round. Second, as with any in-vitro fertilization, multiple viable embryos can result and sustain after implantation, leading to multiple births. In other words, parents who choose this method so they can manipulate their baby’s gender may get much more than they bargained for – a virtual jackpot of boy or girl babies!

Two methods similar to PGD for gender selection included processes called MicroSort and Ericsson, both based on procedures developed in 1975 by Ronald J. Ericsson, Ph.D. Dr. Ericsson came up with methods by which X and Y sperm can be separated through a filtering process. Parents who want a boy baby would then have Y sperm inseminated into the woman to fertilize the egg at ovulation. This method is now used in about half of the IVF centers in the United States. It is less effective than PGD, but also less expensive.

An at-home method that is controversial, but doesn’t involve artificial insemination, is known as the Shettles method. Developed by Dr. Landrum Shettles, this method involves timing intercourse to ovulation based on characteristics of sperm.

The Shettles method requires that prospective parents chart the condition of cervical mucus and basal body temperature and use an ovulation prediction kit. The theory suggests that to conceive a boy, prospective parents should have sex the day before or the day of ovulation. It’s based on Shettles’ study findings that Y sperm survive less time in the womb, but are faster swimmers. The study also recommends that sex should involve deep penetration and orgasms at the same time, since the woman’s orgasm produces substances that make the vaginal environment more hospitable to male sperm.

While there are countless women worldwide who say the Shettles method enabled them to conceive the boy baby they wanted, medical science has been unable to duplicate Dr. Shettles’ results. Since reproducing a study’s same results independently is a cornerstone of the scientific method, this has led many medical experts to counsel against the Shettles method for gender selection.

Although parents are generally happy with whatever sex their baby is, they may also have a preference to conceive a boy naturally. Some couples may have genetic or medical reasons for wanting to conceive a boy, in which case contacting an IVF clinic is advised, whilst others may already have girls and want to try to conceive a boy naturally rather than engage in the ethical risks and dilemmas involved in IVF(in vitro fertilisation).

In the past there have been a variety of beliefs concerning how to conceive a boy naturally. For example, Leviticus 12:2 states that if the woman has an orgasm before the man this will produce male offspring, and in some cultures it was believed that if the couples’ heads were facing North whilst having intercourse, then they would have a boy. As time has passed we have been able to dispel the old myths and a variety of new theories have come forward, with the Shettles method being the most highly regarded for how to conceive a boy naturally.

The Shettles method was developed by Landrum Shettles who believed that knowledge of the differences between the X and Y sperm could be exploited to improve the odds of conceiving a boy naturally. Although there is little scientific investigation to back up Landrum Shettles’ assertions, the arguments used have influenced the variety of book and gender selection kits in the market.

The Shettles method is, in essence, that if the couple have sex closer to ovulation (between one day before and half a day after ovulation) then the probability that they will conceive a boy naturally increases, as a result of the high mobility and decreased life span of the sperm. Shettles also argues that sexual position may be influential, and in order to conceive a boy naturally, deep penetration will be beneficial as ejaculation deposit’s the sperm closer to the cervix and allows the ‘boy sperm’, which are more aggressive and quicker, a greater chance of fertilising the egg.

Diet is also viewed as an important factor in the ability to conceive a boy naturally, and consuming sodium and potassium rich foods whilst reducing the mother’s intake of calcium and magnesium are believed to increase chances of a boy. Therefore eating salty snacks, meats, pasta, and fruits high in potassium such as bananas is advised.

Interestingly, contemporary sources have re-examined the statement from Leviticus and there may be some truth to the assertion, as the alkaline fluid released is thought to be more beneficial to male sperm than the vagina’s natural acidity, therefore improving chances of conceiving a boy naturally.

Regardless of these theories, it is worth noting that within a single ejaculation millions of sperm are released and as a result there may not be a great deal of impact from implementing any of the above strategies. Although helpful, none of the above is able to guarantee that you will conceive a boy naturally.

If you want to have a baby boy, there are a few natural ways that you can manipulate the timing and position of intercourse and vaginal PH during conception that can greatly increase your chances of having a son.

Of these variables, timing conception to correspond with the woman’s ovulation can be one of the most important pieces of this puzzle. Here’s why:

Y (Boy) Sperm Are Faster, But Weaker Than X (Girl): During conception, a man’s sperm contains an equal amount of chromosomes that after conception can produce either a male and female baby. If a Y chromosome sperm fertilizes the egg first, the conception will result in a baby boy. If it’s instead an X, the result will be a baby girl.

Since the sperm contain both X and Y chromosomes, couples have a random chance of conceiving either sex going in. However, you can manipulate different variables, based on what we know about the different characteristics of each.

For example, the Y (boy sperm) are very fast swimmers and will generally make it to the egg first. The catch though is that they are much more fragile and die off faster. The X (girl) are extremely hard and can survive for a longer period of time in a harsher environment.

Timing Of Ovulation For A Boy: That’s why in order to have a son, you should conceive as close to possible on the day of ovulation. The most optimal time is on the day of. If you conceive well before ovulation, you would increase your chances of having a girl because this would give the hardier X sperm the advantage since they can survive long enough to wait for the egg while the Y can not.

There are all kinds of methods that women use to track their ovulation, including cervical mucus, the position and feel or the cervix, and ovulation predictor kits. In my opinion, the methods that rely upon cervical inspection are just too subjective or individual to be accurate enough. Ovulation predictor kits are more accurate, but I find the salvia tests to be much more accurate than their urine counterparts. This accuracy is extremely important since the boy sperm die off very quickly and optimally need to be waiting once the egg is released.

Other Variables For Having A Boy Baby (Vaginal PH, Intercourse Positioning): Of course, ovulation timing this is only one of several variables. You’ll also need to create a vaginal PH / environment that is conducive to producing a son. An environment that is too acidic favors girls much more as they are hardier enough to survive this. You need to make your PH more alkaline either by douching with specific formulas (not just baking soda and water) and / or consuming and avoiding certain foods. Gender selection clinics charge hundreds of dollars for these douches, but there are recipes that allow you to make them at home. (If you are opposed to douching, you can change your vaginal acidity using foods, but you’ll have to be much more diligent about it.)

I highly recommend testing your PH with testing strips so that you’ll know exactly where you fall. Highly acidic women sometimes have a greater challenge conceiving boys. Knowing your acidity going in is extremely helpful because you will then know how much adjustment you’ll need and you’ll also know when you’ve achieved the “boy zone.”

It’s also recommended that you conceive using intercourse positions that deposit the sperm as close to the cervix as possible. This gives the Y sperm less distance to travel and helps them reach the egg before they begin to die off. It’s also recommended that the woman have an orgasm for male conception (but not for a girl) as doing so will make the environment more alkaline and less acidic.
