29th Week of Pregnancy

As you enter 29th week of pregnancy, your weight gain would be approximately between 19 to 25 pounds. Your baby now weighs about 2 ¾ pounds and is roughly over 14 ½ inches in height when measured from the head to heel. Your baby’s development is really very fast since 28th week and it will continue in this week as well. Your baby’s lungs are maturing and getting ready for the first breath of your baby after birth. Muscles are developing rapidly.

You need to include all the nourishing foods into your daily food intake and get sufficient rest. Required amount of calcium, iron, protein, vitamin C and folic acid is very essential in your food so that your baby gets sufficient nutrients to help his/her growing body. Discuss your diet with your health care provider to ensure you are including the required amount of nutrients in your daily diet.

Drink milk to ensure sufficient calcium intake. However if you do not like the idea of drinking milk, find of other food items that are good source of calcium like yogurt, cheese etc. Consult your health care provider before including or avoiding any food item in your diet. This is very important as your baby’s bones are now absorbing calcium to become stronger. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, heartburn etc. Include fiber rich food in your diet to avoid constipation.

Avoid taking big meals. Four to five small meals divided in the day will keep you from getting bloated sensation. Your restricted physical activity coupled with rest is the main cause of heartburn and constipation. Avoid canned juices, drink fresh juices instead. Eating fiber rich food can also help avoid constipation.

Your health care provider may tell you to monitor baby’s movements throughout the day. If you feel your baby is less active than normal then contact your doctor immediately.

If you are working, now is the time to decide whether you want to take maternity leave now or you want to continue till delivery. Speak to your employer regarding your maternity leave. You can get the details about maternity leave from department of labor of your state. Though Family and Medical Leave Act has the provision about 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave for both the parents after birth of child, there are a few exceptions to this rule. Check whether you come under those exceptions.

Your state’s department of labor will be able to guide you properly regarding your rights at work place during pregnancy and after delivery. Some companies in the US offer paternity leave. If your partner can avail this leave, then consider that leave while planning the maternity leave. This way both you and your partner can share the responsibility of your baby.

There is another equally important issue for moms-to-be after maternity leave and that is nursery supplies. Keep your nursery well stocked with baby diapers, baby wipes, baby nail clippers, mild detergent for washing baby’s clothes etc.  Happy shopping!
